Personal Identity The Black Rose Killer - 988 Words

Brother Edward was known as a serial killer with the nickname â€Å"The Black Rose Killer† because after each murder he would leave a black rose at the scene. He was an interesting man because he devoted his life to religion of Catholicism and he killed people on the side. He has the same identity because he is the same person and same soul, but is he really the same identity? He lives the life of two completely different people and does completely different things with those two different personalities. Mark Rowland’s essay of Personal Identity ties in perfectly with Brother Edward. Brother Edward is a person who would be a perfect applicant for theory of personal identity. According to Mark Rowland’s soul theory, each one of us is essentially a soul and this soul is stuck with us in our body forever until we die. The soul does not change. No matter how we change as a person, the soul will always be the same and that’s how a person is different from anoth er person because everyone has a unique soul. The soul theory has a lot to do with dualism and it creates problems. Even if we get through these problems. The problem is that the soul makes it so you can make a 100% guaranteed judgement about someone’s personal identity. Now this means that Brother Edward will always have the same soul and he will always be Brother Edward. Even if he had a different body, he would still be Brother Edward because a soul never changes.
